The test consists of 40 multiple-choice questions divided into two equal sections:
Passing Score: You must get at least 16 out of 20 correct in each section to pass. If you fail one section, you only need to retake that specific part.
To pass on your first try, you should focus on these core areas:
The Official MTO Driver’s Handbook: This is the primary source for all test questions.
Right-of-Way Rules: Understanding who goes first at four-way stops and uncontrolled intersections.
Demerit Points: Knowing how many points lead to a license suspension.
Alcohol & Drug Limits: Understanding the Zero Tolerance policy for young and novice drivers.
Road Signs: Learning the difference between regulatory (red/white), warning (yellow), and information (green/blue) signs.
To take the test at a DriveTest center, you must:
Be at least 16 years old.
Pass a basic eye examination.
Bring original identification (showing your legal name and date of birth, like a Passport or PR Card).
Pay the G1 Package Fee (includes the written test, your future G2 road test, and the 5-year license fee).
Once you pass, remember your “G1 Rules”:
Zero Blood Alcohol: You must have 0% alcohol or drugs in your system.
Accompanied Driving: You must have a G-licensed driver with at least 4 years of experience in the front passenger seat.
No High-Speed Highways: You cannot drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways (unless with a certified instructor).
Night Driving: You cannot drive between midnight and 5:00 AM.
